Can I Specialize In More Than One Genre? || Fashion Glamour Photography by Reality Reimagined

I’m going to ask you a question at the end of this post – get ready.

It amazes me how one single element can trigger so very much of the imagination. A color, a phrase of music, a feeling and so much more, all can just be the little spark that starts a fire that soon is roaring and feels out of control.
I’ve been experimenting with new lighting patterns that have been the result of chasing something that I see in my mind. I’m getting closer to a basic set of three patterns that I will bounce between with my work in the “dramatic sorta fashion kinda glamour maybe boudoir?” genre that I want to move toward. But I also want to photograph gel lighting in the same made up genre I just described. And I want to create fantasy composite artwork as well. And I want to teach others how to do the same.

But aren’t we supposed to pick a lane as professional photographers (which means we need to make money to keep the lights on) and just stick to that? Brand recognition is hard when you specialize in everything and master none of them – right? How are people to know what to hire me for?

Sigh. Those are the questions that stop me leaping into the unknown of what I so desperately want to create from my imagination.

And then, one day – you just say “fuck it” and you build a visual dialogue, share it with some talented individuals and go capture what you WANT to do and figure the rest of that business stuff out, later.

That was the journey a few days ago with Danielle and Madicyn and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Of course, now I want to do more sessions like this, but change it up; the cycle never ends in my head and it’s quite maddening.

So do I really have to be known for just one or two things as a photographer and artist?
